COMING SOON: WINGS PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND ENTRANCE CRITERIA Independent Study is a project that all the fifth and sixth graders work on during the year. Students think of a topic they would like to research in depth and formulate questions that they would like to answer through research. One year one of the students explored the effects of different kinds of music on academic performance. He had the WINGS students and many of the classes in his home school, Old Mill Road, listen to classical, hard rock and no music. Then they had to calculate, memorize and copy a text. His results indicated that most of the kids performed the math and the memorization better with classical music and the copying was performed best when no music was presented. Another group did a project called Animal Menagerie. For this project, they had to create a number of new animals, their food webs, ecosystem, skeleton systems, where they live, etc. They also had to create an island that had never been discovered by man. | Independent Study is a great thing to do, because you learn a lot, and it's very fun to do!! At the end of the year, students are evaluated on our presentations and our projects. A panel of judges will hears our presentation and grades them using a rubric. |
