 Independent Study

      Hello parents and students.  I am so excited with your current Independent Studies.  This year our WINGS students will  be integrating  global studies with their burgeoning technology skills.  We will be applying cultural universals to our studies of tribes in the Amazon, in the deserts of Afghanistan, the mountains of Mongolia and other far reaches of our planet.              

Additionally, our students will continue to use the prompts of Depth and Complexity to help give their studies sophistication and rigor.  This also assures me that their research responds to sophisticated queries and that their thinking, likewise, is activated at high levels of challenge.

An image conveys a world of information and can activate sophisticated intellectual curiosity.  In WINGS the development of  questioning skills leads to research into content rich with fascinating details.  For example, we can wonder (and then explore) what this Tibetan woman is cooking and whether this photo is taken in her kitchen or in an outside market area.

We can learn about the ways in which her life is different than ours and the ways in which her life might be the same.  Learning about other cultures brings us closer to an understanding and appreciation of our own, while simultaneously expanding our knowledge about the ever-shrikning world we live in.  

As we conduct our research, we will be using our district's  formative technology to make "documentaries" about the cultures we are studying.  The students are very excited about pusuing their new roles as film directors and producers! 

In keeping with our global theme, we will be studying Cultural Universals.  These are features found in all societies around the world.  These are traits that every culture or society has, although every culture has its own unique and special way of expressing itself in the following cultural universal categories:     Food and Drink    Beauty     Money     Clothing        Language and Writing   Technology   Physical Appearance   Government    Music and Dance       Religious Beliefs   Jobs  Games, Sports and Recreation   Art and Architecture   Holidays and Celebrations    Shelter  Entertainment   Education   Transportation    Healthcare and Medicine
