New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) was created to advocate and improve music education for all New Yorkers. It does so through musical activites, programs and committees which are age-appropriate and current with the National and State Standards for Music Education.
The NYSSMA Solo/Ensemble Festival takes place once a year. For the Solo Festival, students prepare a solo and major scales (instrumentalists only) to perform for an adjudicator. After that, the student is asked to sight-read (sing or play music that they have never seen before). The adjudicator fills out a universal form that consists of a rating scale and comments for different aspects of performing music, i.e. technique and expression...etc. The student is then given a total score for the experience.
