Dear Parents and Guardians,
The purpose of this letter is to centralize the information we have been sending to you in order to keep communication clear as we navigate this period of school closure due to the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Board of Education Meeting, April 7, 2020:
The Board of Education Meeting scheduled for April 7 will be held in a closed session that can be viewed remotely. We will provide the link to the meeting shortly.
Non-public Transportation Deadline Extended to April 15:
New York State has extended the deadline for transportation requests for non-public students to April 15.
Schools Closed till April 20:
Governor Cuomo announced on 3/27 that all New York State schools will remainnclosed until Wednesday, April 15th. This date falls in the middle of our Spring Recess. Please know that the North Merrick School District will remain closed through the end of that week. Therefore, our return date, as of today will be Monday, April 20th.
Budget Vote and Board of Education Election Postponed:
New York State has announced that the Budget Vote and Board of Education Election has been postponed to no earlier than June 1. When the state has confirmed a new date, we will announce it.
In adhering to new guidelines for school districts, North Merrick has closed all school grounds and locked all gates. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
Communication and Remote Learning:
School-home communication started March 18 through the Teacher Webpages on the district website at www.nmerrickschools.org. North Merrick teachers began using the Google Classroom platform starting Tuesday, March 24, at 9 a.m. More detailed information will be sent from your child's teacher. Please refer to the letter about Google Classroom from Deputy Superintendent Beth Friedman.
Free & Reduced Lunch:
The Free & Reduced Lunch program for students continues through the school closure but has been revised. Please note that families may pick up five (5) weekly lunches for their children on Mondays only from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the side door of the General Purpose Room at H.D. Fayette School, 1057 Merrick Avenue, starting March 30. There will be no pick up on Tuesday-Friday.
Parents who are First Responders or Critical Health Care Workers may register their children for Child Care through SCOPE educational services. On their website, please click the first button that says "CLICK HERE for SCOPE Emergency Child Care". On your behalf, please be advised that we are working with SCOPE regarding cost. Please register if you need this service and select the best location on the list for you. A list of Child Care Providers from BOCES is posted on this website.
Nassau BOCES has created a link for all parents from the Office of Children and Family Services to to a survey about their childcare needs. Go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3HSNNYJ
Kindergarten screenings are postponed and will be rescheduled.
The expectation is that students will complete all assigned work to the best of their ability. If they have an issue or difficulty, it is expected that they reach out to their teacher for assistance.
We ask that parents/guardians support and work with their children around this new and unique learning environment. If your child needs assistance with technology or is having difficulty with lessons, please be sure to contact your children’s teachers.
Please continue to follow the recommendations by the National Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding personal hygiene, social distancing and protocols for those who are not feeling well. While schools are closed, it is best to limit social interactions, including playdates and group activities. The District is working diligently to take every precaution to guard against exposure to COVID-19. We will continue to update you. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
