2023-24 Budget Vote and Election Information

The North Merrick School District will be holding its Annual Budget Vote and Board of Education Election on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. On that date, the voters of the school district will vote on the 2023-2024 School District Budget and Board Trustee Election. Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at the North Merrick Library, 1691 Meadowbrook Road, North Merrick.
Running for the School Board:
There will be two (2) open seats on the Board of Education this year. The terms will run from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026. Information for those wishing to be candidates for the open seats is found below.
Qualifications for Candidacy on the Board of Education:
Those who run for membership on the Board of Education must:
- Be a citizen of the United States of America;
- Be at least eighteen (18) years of age;
- Be able to read and write;
- Be a resident of the North Merrick School District continuously for one (1) year;
- Not be an employee of the school district;
- Not be a family member of the Board of Education residing in the same household.
Nominating Petitions:

Petitions may be picked up at the Administrative Building, 1057 Merrick Avenue, North Merrick, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Nominating petitions must be submitted to the District Clerk no later than Monday, April 17, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. in order to appear on the ballot for the May 16, 2023 election.
Voter Information:
In order to vote, you must be:
- A citizen of the United States;
- Eighteen years of age or older;
- A legal resident of the school district for at least 30 days prior to the vote;
- Registered to vote in general elections or have been registered to vote in the school district.
Voter Registration:
Qualified voters may register any school day with the District Clerk, Joanne Long, at the Administration Building at 1057 Merrick Avenue in Merrick between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The deadline to register in person is Thursday, May 11, 2023. This registration will only allow registrants to vote in the School District Election.
Evening registration will take place on May 10, 2023 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the H.D. Fayette Elementary School, 1057 Merrick Avenue, North Merrick.
Absentee Ballots:
Absentee Ballot Applications may be obtained from the District Clerk, Joanne Long, at the Administrative Building, 1057 Merrick Avenue, North Merrick or by downloading, below:

You may use an absentee ballot to vote in the school election if you are a registered voter who resides in the school district. You may only apply for an absentee ballot on your own behalf. If you have any questions, please contact the District Clerk, Joanne Long, at 516-292-3695.
Completed absentee ballot applications may not be received by the District Clerk earlier than Monday, April 17, 2023, and these applications must be received by the District Clerk at least seven (7) days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter or to the agent named in the absentee ballot application.
Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk not later than 5:00 p.m., prevailing time, on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
Military Ballots:
Military Ballot Applications may be obtained from the Office of the District Clerk and submitted to the District Clerk by mail, no later than Thursday, April 20, 2023. Military Ballots will be mailed out no later than Friday, April 22, 2023 and must be filed with the District Clerk by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16, 2023.
