North Merrick community marks Memorial Day with Field of Flags event

A student-led initiative created a patriotic display on the front lawn of the Harold D. Fayette School as the North Merrick Schools community marked Memorial Day with the annual Field of Flags event on May 14.

The Camp Avenue School Student Council led fundraising efforts this year to support the Wounded Warrior Project, which provides care for veterans through programs, services and advocacy. Veterans and community members gathered in the Fayette School general purpose room to hear a performance of “Marching Marines” by the districtwide marching band. American Legion Post 1282 Chaplain Jim O’Neal thanked the students for their efforts and emphasized the importance of passing down the stories of servicemembers. After the marching band closed the ceremony with a final performance of “Aspire, Achieve,” students were joined by veterans on the front lawn.
