Thanksgiving parade is an engineering exercise at Old Mill Road

Students’ knowledge of engineering was put to the test at Old Mill Road School in the North Merrick School District on Nov. 19, as second graders were joined by parents for a Thanksgiving themed exercise.
Mimicking the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, student and parent duos were challenged to create a float of their own with balloons, streamers and straws. Starting with a planning phase, each float was conceptualized on paper, including the mechanism that would keep it afloat. As they assembled their materials, students used trial and error to see what method of holding their float works best. Creative solutions included attaching balloons atop a scaffold of straws. After completing their floats, students and parents paraded through the halls of Old Mill Road.
