Dear Parents, Students and Community Members,
On behalf of the Board of Education and district administration, welcome to the 2019-20 school year in the North Merrick School District! Whether your summer was filled with family travel, spending days at a lake or pool, or participating in camp, this time of year always brings with it the pull of anticipation of crisp Autumn weather and getting back into the school routine.
I’m excited to report that we start September with the completion of the structural redesign of our classrooms and labs, which has transformed the learning spaces in all three schools. Students return already familiar with technology, including the use of Chromebooks and Google Classroom, as well as a fluency in the Fountas and Pinnell classroom for grades K-3 and the ELA workshop model for grades 4-6. The district continues to deepen the hands-on science program on each grade level and is piloting the online enVisions Math series to enhance students’ numerical skills. Students may participate in the winter Saturday Academy in Spanish or Mandarin and choose from a wide variety of after-school clubs. In addition, the district has implemented the new state guidelines for mental health instruction and counseling services.
New initiatives this year are the H2O after-school extra help sessions to reinforce or catch up on learning; academic enrichment modules in an array of subjects; and the expansion of the upper intermediary departmentalized schedule for both fifth and sixth grade students, which incorporates a Word Power component to address social-emotional learning, digital citizenship and critical reading skills.
As a K-6 district, North Merrick is uniquely focused on the needs of the elementary-age child. Through our three-year strategic plan, we have positioned the district for 21st century learning and success beyond our school walls. Please visit the district website and look for our e-newsletters to stay in the know about the many exciting programs and activities planned for this school year. Once again, I look forward to working in partnership with you in the best interest of our students.
