As a culminating activity for the end of the school year, each of the North Merrick schools held college and career symposiums for students in grades 4-6 during the week of June 7. Take a look at the photos and stories for Camp, Fayette and Old Mill Road that are posted on their school websites.
The North Merrick Virtual School held its College and Career Symposium with 25 talented parent volunteers presenting a variety of workshops.
Each presenter was assigned a half-hour session - but many ran much longer due to the great interest from the students. The presenters focused on the education needed and determination and character traits involved in being successful in their field. The last 5-10 minutes of each presentation was devoted to a question-and-answer period.
Presenters took the students on virtual tours of their work places and provided interactive experiences, such as decorating cakes, layering sound and music to demonstrate how the audio for commercials are made, and so much more! There were even a few trivia activities!
Students in grades 4 and 5 were assigned to a workshop session based on their responses to the Career Interest Explorer Assessment for Elementary Students (published by the College Foundation). Students in grade 6 were assigned a workshop session based on the Career Survey Assessment in Naviance. These surveys were administered and facilitated by the district guidance counselor, Ms. Jackie Sekunda, during guidance lessons.
