North Merrick Starts the New School Year with Meet & Greets and Mindful Moment Journals
North Merrick teachers greeted their students and handed out copies of My North Merrick Mindful Moments Journals before the start of the school year on August 31. "It’s a nice, welcoming way for students and their parents to meet and interact with their teachers in an informal setting and make them more comfortable for the first day of school," explains Dr. Cynthia Seniuk, Superintendent of Schools.
The journals tie in to the districtwide mindfulness practice in the schools, which includes the Responsive Classroom Morning Meetings initiative that began last year and the Closing Circles initiative, which is being integrated at the end of each school day this year. Students can write their thoughts and feelings in their journals every day.
Notes Dr. Seniuk, "As the mental health and wellness of our students are at the forefront of our priorities for the return to school - and every day thereafter - the journals will help students to express themselves and help to lessen any possible anxiety they may have."
