North Merrick second grade students took their traditional field trips to Short Beach this month to observe marine life as part of the science unit of study. The program was also extended to third grade classes to provide them with the experience they missed last year due to pandemic restrictions.
This hands-on learning focuses on observation, inquiry, and discovery. The curriculum follows the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with interdisciplinary connections to literature, art, and the English Language Arts (ELA) Common Core Standards.
Students visited the beach at low tide. They learned to use a seine net, looked closely at the creatures that live along the rocky shores and in tide pools, and collected seaweed, beach glass and shells. Back in school, sixth grade students are assisting with the maintenance of the classroom fish tanks as the younger students continue to delve deeper “under the sea.”
