North Merrick Hands-on Science Curriculum Continues with Stream Tables
Fourth grade students in the three district schools all participate in the unit of study entitled "Stream Tables: From Rocks to Soil to Engineering Solutions."
The classes create the large tables as representative models to observe the dynamics of rivers, streams, land masses, and waterways. The students also learn about the interaction between rocks, water, soil temperature, and air.
They construct and identify the elements of streams, land, and water forms and use the science skills of observation, classification, conclusions, and problem solving. This unit of study is also takes an interdisciplinary approach with social studies, as fourth graders conduct research on climate and conservation and find solutions through engineering.
