Every class in the North Merrick School District participated in World Read-Aloud Day on February 2.
Twenty authors shared their books in virtual read-alouds, provided related activities, and participated in lively Q&A sessions.
Selections ranged from picture books such as Butternut and Buttercup by Jill Dana for new readers to historical non-fiction like Most Wanted: The Revolutionary Partnership of John Hancock and Samuel Adams for older students.
Among the authors were North Merrick teachers Deidre Boyle with I Am Me Wherever I Go and Kathryn Pascarella with Never Give Up as well as Steven Bromberg, husband of Camp Avenue Principal Hillary Bromberg, with the first book in his series called Simple Sam Eats…What?
World Read-Aloud Day is an international program, created by Lit World and sponsored by Scholastic, which promotes the shared connection of reading aloud and a lifelong love of reading.
In North Merrick, World Read-Aloud Day was coordinated by Christine Talbot, Supervisor of Instructional Technology and Library Media. The featured books were purchased for the school libraries, where students may borrow the books and share them with their families at home.
Authors from around the country zoomed into North Merrick classrooms. Here, Laura Roettiger talks to the students about her book Aliana Reaches for the Moon, which bridges art and science.
Jenny Wagh, author of Eggasaurus, a picture book about a boy and his dad who bought too many dinosaur eggs, also provided drawing tips for North Merrick students to create their own dinosaurs.
Author Steven Bromberg tells students about his character in Simple Sam Eats…What?, who is reluctant to try new foods.
Students are inspired to Never Give Up through an endearing and encouraging story by North Merrick teacher Kathryn Pascarella.
