The new Saturday Spanish Academy for sixth grade students in the North Merrick Schools began on February 3. Señor Hayes Oakley welcomed the students and explored various phrases used to meet and greet someone in the Spanish language. Students sang a song of greetings, read a book of phrases, and played a conversation matching game, all in Spanish!
The class will meet twice a month from February to June for interactive Spanish language instruction with a focus on culture and beginning-level expressions. Through reading, writing, listening and speaking, students will learn vocabulary for the alphabet, calendar, classroom objects, school subjects, commands, numbers, colors and greetings as well as an understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures. Students will also participate in virtual field trips, play popular games such as Monopoly and Scrabble in the Spanish language, and enjoy Spanish music and art.
